Public records are documents that are available for people’s access. Most of these records pertain to property rights, utilities, lawsuit, marriage and divorce, occupational licenses and death records online. Over time, different states and local government agencies have moved towards making all its records accessible online. This is particularly helpful for people who need immediate access to government files needed by local individuals for research and education purposes. However, this doesn’t mean that access to these records has no restrictions.

A certain level of restraint is implemented, depending on the type of documents being accessed. Some website offering this service requires searchers to register. But with the Freedom of Information (FOI) that has been legislated, access to public documents has been made easier.

However, when it comes to accessing personal information about a person, the restrictions apply. Restrictions vary from one state to another. For example, in California, the California Public Records Act (PRA) says that except for particular clear exemptions, personal information about an individual may not be disclosed unless the person allows it.

There are different companies that provide access to different records. Some, however, sell these information, especially when it’s rare and very important. However, there are different ways to gain access to public records for free. The easiest way is to search the web through Google.com or any other search engines available. Looking into county’s clerk office allows individuals to access records on lawsuits or when searching through national archives, historical documents can be accessed.

The most controversial part of viewing public records is the search for information of a particular person. At some extent, this is possible; however, most of the time, only basic information is available for viewing. This includes home address and telephone number. Sometimes, these data are not provided. Having access to public records is helpful in different ways. For example, with the case of death records online, distant relatives can find their lineage with a particular person just by looking at the records. Most death records are recent and complete; so these are the best reference when tracking down family tree.
